Film Festival Studies

The Film Studies Program at Santa Barbara City College offers opportunities for students to immerse themselves in 3-4 weeks of film viewing, writing, and learning at film festivals throughout the world. Each course takes place at a specified film festival as scheduled in the Current Class Schedule. There are extra fees for each course depending on festival and location.

Spring 2024:

 
FS108A: Film Festival Studies (2 units) will be offered Spring 2024 at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Course begins: Feb. 6, 2024

Requirements for this class:

  • Morning class meetings at SBCC.
  • Daily film screening at the festival: 1-2 films daily minimum > 14 films/events total for the class.
  • Panels and some possible tributes.

FS108B: Film Festival Studies (1.5 units) will be offered Fall 2024 at the AFI International Film Festival, in Hollywood.
Course begins: Thurs. Oct. 15, 2020
Course ends: Thurs. Oct. 22, 2020

Information about fees TBA. Starting Fall 2019, AFI is charging for tickets.  Here is more information: https://fest.afi.com/tickets/.  But AFI Fest gave each student free tickets while we are at the festival 2019.  More information to come.

There are two courses for the Film Festival Course depending on the length of the class:

FS108A — Film Festival Studies: 4 weeks (2 units)
Four week field course at film festivals to study U.S. and international fiction, experimental and documentary films. Focuses on the role of festivals in the film marketplace, emergence of new filmmakers, national cinemas, and the practice of writing film criticism. Film screenings supplemented by lectures, discussions, readings, and panel discussions. Fee required.

FS108B — Film Festival Studies: 3 weeks (1.5 units)
Three week field course at film festivals to study U.S. and international fiction, experimental and documentary films. Focuses on the role of festivals in the film market place, emergence of new filmmakers, national cinemas, and the practice of writing film criticism. Film screenings supplemented by lectures, discussions, readings and panel discussions. Fee required.
